# Catching teh gay in church

The Pope is quite right that it's wrong for the British government to force churches to be gay or women-friendly. If people want to be sexist or racist or homophobic and not associate with or employ certain types of people, then in a free society that should be allowed. In fact, "allowed" is the wrong word: there should be no need to think of it in terms of being "allowed" at all, as if permission were needed. That's just how it should be.

Of course, people should also be free to not hire Christians if they don't want to, especially if said Christians go to churches which are known for their homophobic or racist or sexist views. I don't think ole Ratzinger would be too sold on that idea, though.

Update: this prompted a bit of discussion at home. Individuals might discriminate, but obviously I believe the state has no right to do so. And Ronwen made a good point - if churches want to enjoy favourable treatment by the state (tax and otherwise), then they should stfu and do what the government tells them, or give up the perks.
