Zarqawi is dead

Iraq's al-Qaeda whack-job-in-chief Abu Musab al-Zarqawi is dead. The world's a better place for it, but I doubt it's going to precipitate any real improvement in the state Iraq is in, even though I'm sure many of the usual suspects will try to spin it that way.

It's worth noting that in healthy, hope-filled new democracies, bad guys are apprehended, tried and put in jail. In war-torn hell-holes, the only way to get rid of the bad guys is by dropping a ton of explosives on their heads.

So the way in which it had to be done, and the fact that it took so long to do it, tells you all you need to know about Iraq circa 2006. But it's still a good thing that the monster is gone.
