# Western Values

Fresh from the 'no shit' department, the byline for this BBC article on the new Abu Ghraib photos says:
US fears new images could fuel global anti-American feeling
So says the Pentagon. Which is funny, because every time someone suggests that US foreign policy might have some kind of influence on anti-US sentiment in the Middle East, it's dismissed as the rantings of uppity ignant Muslims or hand-wringing defeatist fag libruls.

The pictures that are cropping up all over are really disturbing, but hey. We gotta put this in perspective. Us Westerners aren't barbarians like the Middle Eastern hordes, dammit. At least we have the decency to commit our atrocities by proxy, and if you don't actually have blood on your hands, then you don't really have blood on your hands, do you?

Besides. Every time a naked, hooded Muslim is traumatised by a guard dog, Jesus smiles. And God reserves a special bit of Freedom-loving sunshine, every day, for Gitmo.

Well said. Three cheers for the red, black and blue!

Did you forget the "irony" tags around the post? What word would you use when you preach freedom, democracy, civil rights on one hand and act despectably on the other? With my limited knowledge of English only "Double Standard" comes to my mind.
And the "Middle Eastern Hordes" at the end pray to the same god! (They only disagree about the ground staff with us).
I've been to the US in Jan after 7 years and met great people in a great country.
You don't have the government you deserve.

Stephan, closer to 'sarcasm' than 'irony' :)

Btw, I'm not American, but I agree with your points completely. It's not about being anti-American or tarring all people of one nationality with the same brush. I do not think that any of us in the West can look around us and say that our cultures or societies are completely free of the hypocrisy I was referring to. And even in the same society, different people are guilty of different types of hypocrisy. But the hypocrisy that manifests in things like Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay is especially vile to me.

I saw an amazing article in the Mail and Guardian about Iran and the *real* cause of the Iraq war:

http://www.mg.co.za/articlePage.aspx?articleid=265434&area=/insight/insight__international/

The author says it was all because the Iraqi's were thinking of changing their Oil currency from Dollars to Euro's, which would ruin America economically. Now Iran is apparently going in the same direction.
